Edge vs Serverless: Decision Framework
The choice between Edge Functions and Serverless Functions is not about preference — it is driven by what the function needs to do.
Use Edge Functions when:

- -You need near-zero cold starts — V8 isolates start in single-digit milliseconds versus 100-500ms for Lambda
Use Serverless Functions when:
- -The function requires Node.js built-in modules (fs, child_process, net, crypto with specific algorithms)
- -The function uses npm packages that depend on Node.js APIs or native bindings
- -The function performs CPU-intensive work that benefits from larger memory/CPU allocation
- -The function needs to run longer than the Edge Function timeout (typically 25 seconds on Pro)
Edge Middleware Patterns
Middleware runs before every matched request and operates at the edge. It intercepts the request, can modify it, redirect it, rewrite it, or return a response directly.

Cold Start Optimization
